Florida Appeals Court: Pregnant Minor Must Notify Parents Of Intended Abortion

A Florida district court has denied a pregnant minor’s appeal to avoid notifying her parents she planned to have an abortion. The ruling stems from a 2004 state constitutional amendment requiring parents to be notified before teenage daughters terminate pregnancies.

How much responsibility should parents bear when their children get into trouble?  It’s an issue the Florida Senate is weighing through a proposal giving courts discretion over restitution judgments against minors.

Florida prison guards are asking state lawmakers for pay raises similar to those given to other law enforcement officers last year. As Jessica Palombo reports, the guards say low pay and inflexible holiday time cause many of their fellow officers to leave prisons for other jobs—and to become less effective at guarding violent criminals.

Florida is another step closer to joining 13 other states in making it illegal for certain minors to get married. 

Miami Democratic Representative Cynthia Stafford’s bill passed unanimously in the House Healthy Families Subcommittee Tuesday. The measure prohibits anyone age 15 and younger from getting married. Stafford says in the past couple of years, there have been several marriages that involve underage minors, including one with a 13-year-old groom.
