Leon County Officials Re-evaluate School Safety

In the wake of recent bombs threats against New York, Los Angeles and Miami school districts, Leon County officials are re-evaluating school safety.

Leon County Sheriff’s deputies made two drug and firearm arrests Tuesday. One of the people taken into custody was the victim in a recent shooting at a local apartment complex.

Leon County Sheriff’s deputies are still looking for two men involved in an early morning shooting of another man at an apartment complex. Sheriff’s office spokesman Grady Jordan says it occurred in the parking lot of the Timbers apartments on Timberwood Circle.

The public is invited to attend a candlelight vigil tonight for the Leon County Sheriff’s deputy who was shot and killed over the weekend.

A man known to local law enforcement for having anti-government views shot and killed Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher L. Smith this past weekend. In an emotional press conference Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office, Tallahassee Police Department and Fire Officials outlined the events that led to the first death of a sheriff’s deputy in the county in a century.

A Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy is dead and another wounded after they were ambushed by a man who started shooting at them as they responded to a house fire.

The confrontation occured in the Plantation Woods subdivision.

In a written statement, the Leon Sheriff’s office says, “the suspect took the fallen deputy’s firearm and began walking North on Caracus Court actively shooting at the first responders as they arrived on the scene.

A 63-year-old woman is being charged with premeditated murder in the stabbing death of one of her grandsons.

Deputies found Martha White's car half-a-mile away from the scene of the crime. The arrest report says she was bloody, carrying a wine bottle and Xanax. White told police her grandson's mother had been torturing her for years and that she was "fed up."

Leon County Sues Landowner To Clear Out Homeless Camp

Inhabitants of a homeless camp near North Monroe Street and I-10 are being ordered to vacate the site by July 25 as the result of a lawsuit filed by the Leon County Attorney’s Office against landowner Frank Dama.

For decades, between six and 20 people have lived at the camp some call “Camp Monroe.” Leon County attorneys recently filed an injunctive action against Dama after he failed to respond to nuisance complaints.

Assistant County Attorney Laura Yomans says Dama is not opposed to the homeless living on his land.

Leon County children are getting visits from law enforcement officers who want to read them stories this week. A partnership between local law enforcement agencies and Leon County Libraries, the first-ever read-a-thon event is meant to  bring the library experience into neighborhoods.

On Monday morning, Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy Jessica Ikner was walking through an apartment complex on the south end of town.

She tells a maintenance crew, “You see any kids, you send ‘em to me, OK?”

How The Jameis Winston Case Will Define The Term 'Victim'

The end of the investigation of Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston this week shut the door on criminal charges but opened a discussion of how sexual assault is talked about.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Department is now accepting applications for its Citizen’s Academy. The academy lets people live a day in the life of a Leon County deputy.

Citizen’s Academy classes explain many aspects of a deputy’s job, from administrative duties to hostage negotiations. Students also get to ride with a deputy, watch a SWAT demonstration, and even fire a high-powered weapon. Lieutenant Nancy Burns said it’s a way for the community to connect with the Sheriff’s Department.

The Tallahassee Fire Department, along with other law enforcement and emergency response agencies, tested themselves with a mock chemical explosion and a bomb scare Friday. Officials were focused this time on emergency responses at schools.

At Canopy Oaks Elementary School, the Leon County Sheriff’s Department, the Big Bend Regional Bomb Squad and other groups worked together to locate and eliminate a pretend bomb. Fire Department spokesman Mike Bellamy said the exercise gave all of the groups a chance to work together while training to deal with chemical weapons and explosives.
