The Leon County School Board has passed a $531 million dollar budget for the current school year. Funding for district employees is up over last year. Superintendent Rocky Hanna explained some of that increase is to account for new programs and raises.

Two Leon County School Board races are heading to the general election ballot while one incumbent has managed to squeak out a win.

Leon County Schools has debuted its comprehensive school safety program to be implemented this school year. Many of the updates are mandated by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act passed last Session.

The concerns of teachers are shaping Leon County’s School Board District Five race. At issue is how much control education have over what they teach. The debate comes at a time when public schools are facing greater competition.

Two low performing schools in Leon County are facing an ultimatum. Improve or risk going under private management. Both are located in the the county’s southern region which also has the highest number of minorities and lowest per-family income in the county. But the candidates running to represent that area on the Leon County School Board say they each have a plan to turn things around.

When the Leon County School Board rejected two charter school applications earlier this year, it was seen as pushback against what critics say are efforts to erode traditional public schools. Florida has been trying to turn back the scales on childhood and adolescent obesity and rates have declined in recent years. Still, the numbers are too high for many, and one group is asking the Leon County School District to do more to keep kids at a healthy weight.
