An internal study ordered by the Leon County Commission has found median pay among county employees is slightly higher for women than it is for men. The study examined the wages of nearly 800 employees.

As more and more jails and prison facilities across the U.S. move toward offering video visitation, some are raising concerns it will take the place of in-person visits with loved ones behind bars. We'll take a look at the Leon County Detention facility that has video visitation in parts of its jail, and its future plans.

The Pro gun rights group Florida Carry is threatening to sue Leon County after it passed a gun related ordinance. The ordinance imposes a waiting period and background checks for private gun sales. A 2011 preemption law prevents counties from regulating guns, but a 1998 constitutional amendment allows counties to enact background checks and waiting periods. Program Director for Florida State University’s Center for the Advancement of Human Rights, Mark Schlakman says the constitution should prevail.

After 14 years, the infrared cameras mounted on Leon County sheriff helicopters are in need of replacement. Lieutenant Lee Majors is the LCSO aviation section commander. He says just like officers patrol in their cars, law enforcement takes to the sky on a regular basis to keep area residents safe. And he says the cameras help them do that at night.

Leon County is a pilot community for a new Hurricane Strong Program that’s a partnership between the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes. County spokesman Mathieu Cavell says the program is focused on community resilience.

As Leon County Commissioners consider creating a new tax aimed at supporting local youth, the question of how that money would be spent is growing. A lot of organizations have ideas. Leaders in the Leon County school system say they’d like to see that money help ensure kids are ready to start school.

Leon County Schoolboard member Rosanne Wood says the program has proven successful in other communities.

“They’ve had great success in the six counties that have done it. They’ve brought down infant mortality. They have increased their pre-k enrollment,” Wood says.

While a new law allows Florida schools to arm their teachers, the Leon County School Board has unanimously approved a resolution stating they won’t be doing that in their school district.

Leon County Commissioners have agreed to hear a proposed ordinance to close the so-called gun loophole.

Local governments have little say over the rules that govern firearms. The state passed legislation preempting any local ordinances on the issue. But County attorney Herbert Theile says there is one exception.

Leon County Commissioners are mourning the death of Jane Sauls. The former commissioner served the public for more than 50 years.

The City of Tallahassee is opening up a temporary cold night shelter this week as temperatures drop below freezing. But even with the extra space, some people in need of stable housing won’t make it inside.

Tallahassee’s airport is returning to normal after unseasonable snow grounded seven flights on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Leon County voters could be asked to decide on a bevy of subjects—from whether certain local offices should become non-partisan to limiting Community Redevelopment agency dollars to public projects. The Citizens Review Committee plans to further explore these issues at its upcoming meeting next week.

At a time when the FBI is scrutinizing Tallahassee’s community redevelopment agency, state lawmakers want to reform the groups across Florida. The FBI is currently looking into any wrongdoing stemming from development deals by Tallahassee’s CRA. But the capital city’s agency is not the only one suspected of misusing public money meant to combat blight and slums.
