Southside Tallahassee residents are still worried about a proposal to build a new road through their neighborhoods. If city and county officials approve it, the street would be part of the Airport Gateway plan. A recent public meeting on the issue drew dozens of residents.

At a time when the FBI is scrutinizing Tallahassee’s community redevelopment agency, state lawmakers want to reform the groups across Florida. The FBI is currently looking into any wrongdoing stemming from development deals by Tallahassee’s CRA. But the capital city’s agency is not the only one suspected of misusing public money meant to combat blight and slums.

Leon County’s lawmakers are meeting Monday to hear from voters ahead of the 2018 legislative session. Senator Bill Montford and Representatives Ramon Alexander, Loranne Ausley and Halsey Beshears are expected to be there.

The Five Points intersection in Midtown Tallahassee is a source of congestion and confusion for drivers. Now a local transit board is working on improving the block where 7th Avenue, Thomasville and Meridian Roads meet.

City of Tallahassee officials are urging residents to stay involved in plans to redesign Southside streets. Local government agencies are studying possible improvements for Orange Avenue, Lake Bradford and Springhill Roads, and they want residents to know the plans are still in the conceptual stages.

The City of Tallahassee is suspending construction at the Welaunee development because of permit violations. The company behind the Canopy development on Welaunee Boulevard cleared a 700 foot stretch of woods and enlarged a stormwater pond without proper permits.

Florida leads the nation in pedestrian fatalities. And some think infrastructure is to blame. Now the state Department of Transportation is transforming the way it designs streets. Tallahassee’s South Monroe Street could be one of the first to incorporate the new changes.

County officials say storm debris pick up will start this week and continue until the job is done. Mathieu Cavell is the spokesman for Leon County.

One shelter remains open in Leon County. Officials say they’re keeping the space available for anyone who might not be able to return home yet, as well as anyone who gets stuck on their way. Leon County spokesman Mathieu Cavell says some of those returning home could get stopped on their way by a possible bridge closure along I-75.

Florida’s capital dodged the most destructive impacts of Irma, allowing now city and county operations to begin returning to normal.

Leon County officials have repealed a curfew put in place to keep motorists safe before and after Hurricane Irma.

A Tuesday update showed several Leon County roads remained closed due to downed trees. While officials say crews are actively working to clear all roadways, County Administrator Vince Long explains there’s a reason some may take longer than others.

Update 9/9/17 5:00 p.m.: A voluntary evacuation notice has been issued for all of Leon County. Local officials say to expect 3-5 days without power. The region is likely to experience 18 hours worth of tropical storm force winds beginning Sunday evening into Monday.
