Florida Republican lawmakers are pushing punitive immigrant and refugee legislation once again this session. Similar proposals died last year. But the 2016 campaign season may be stimulating an appetite for change.

Bills in the Florida Legislature would limit the scope and power of the organization that regulates high school athletes, with supporters calling them a victory for student rights. But the regulatory group, the Florida High School Athletic Association, is saying the measures could pave the way for unfairness on the field and reduced quality of tournaments.

Opponents of a bill to change Florida’s standard for evaluating expert witness testimony are doing everything they can to stop the legislation from moving forward in the Florida House. As Sascha Cordner reports, just after the bill was about to pass out of a House panel Wednesday, one lawmaker managed to halt the measure.
