Judge Backs State Disability Agency In Funding, Policy Fight

The Agency For Persons With Disabilities has won a challenge to its way of funding services for disabled Floridians.

The challenge to the program questioned the accuracy of the algorithm used to determine how much money each person gets.  For Lou Ogburn and her 48-year-old developmentally disabled daughter, the Agency For Persons With Disabilities’ iBudget program worked well. Her daughter has been employed with Walmart for 20 years, but she’s about to lose her mentor. Ogburn says the family plans to find a temporary job coach:

Even With Subsidies, Will Insurance Plans Be Affordable On Federal Exchanges?

How affordable will health plans offered on insurance exchanges really be? That’s the question many consumer advocates are wondering in the weeks leading up to the opening of the exchanges.

Those online marketplaces are a key part of the Affordable Care Act, or ObamaCare. Supporters have played up promises of subsidies, better benefits and lower out-of-pocket costs for consumers, but with three weeks left before the marketplaces go live, there are still no firm numbers about how much health insurance plans will cost.

California Complaint About Adult Film Lands In Florida

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is trying to get adult film producers to force performers to wear condoms.

The healthcare advocacy group AIDS Healthcare Foundation is petitioning the Florida Department of Health after performers in an adult film made in Broward and Miami-Dade County were found not to be using condoms. But, the adult film isn’t considered a legitimate business in Florida.

Council Pushes Back Against Reports Of Turmoil In LongTerm Care Program

An advisory panel for the Department of Elder Affairs is pushing back against critics of the state’s long-term care ombudsman panel. 

In a conference call Thursday, the agency’s advisory council decried recent media reports suggesting the departure of longterm care ombudsman Jim Crochet may have been politically influenced. Council member Bill Edelstein put the blame on another former ombudsman--Brian Lee for leaking misinformation:
