The City of Tallahassee is suspending construction at the Welaunee development because of permit violations. The company behind the Canopy development on Welaunee Boulevard cleared a 700 foot stretch of woods and enlarged a stormwater pond without proper permits.

In 2011, Florida made sweeping changes to the laws regulating new development. Now legislators are re-examining how the state is juggling the needs of a growing population. At the time, lawmakers characterized state oversight of development as bad for business, and said rolling back the regulations would boost job creation. Cutting growth management was also a campaign push for then candidate Rick Scott.

The City of Tallahassee is speeding up the process for granting home-building permits. City officials announced their plans Thursday for a faster permitting process while highlighting new homes being built in the Southwood neighborhood.

Starting on Monday, the city will aim to approve all residential building-permit applications within seven days instead of the previous 12. Shane Lambert, of the Tallahassee Builders Association, applauded the change.
