Tallahassee's Community Development Agency (CRA) was questioning its own existence during its meeting on Monday, Sept. 25. Utimately the organization, made up of city and county commissioners, wound up delaying a final decision for a few months

Declaring mission accomplished, Leon County and Tallahassee officials are lowering the curtain on a downtown Community Redevelopment Agency.  At the same time, they stress the move has nothing to do with an ongoing FBI investigation into city backed development projects.

Open Table

This week the city of Tallahassee and the Community Redevelopment Agency handed over 90,000 pages of emails, financial records, and other documents to the FBI in response to two subpoenas dated in June of 2017. Former North Florida U.S. Attorney Pam Marsh joined WFSU’s Perspectives program Thursday to shed some light on how the federal prosecution process works.

There are new developments regarding the federal probe into Tallahassee’s Community Redevelopment Agency. The City of Tallahassee has turned over the documents requested by federal investigators and the agency’s next meeting has been canceled.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum says he’ll fully cooperate with an FBI investigation of a series of businesses and developers with ties to City Hall.

Mayor Gillum says the FBI approached him days ago about its probe into a number of redevelopment deals in the city. Gillum says he was assured he is not the focus of the investigation.

Leon County could see future tax hikes and the phase out of the downtown Community Redevelopment Agency, if a proposed increase in the homestead tax exemption is approved. County commissioners are bracing for the constitutional amendment advanced by state lawmakers.

Local officials are moving forward with a plan to redesign the site that once held Tallahassee’s old homeless shelter. But there are concerns about whether the area can sustain more retail and private homes.

After years of making do, Frenchtown residents could one day have a neighborhood grocery store. That’s part of a early-stage plan to redevelop a key downtown block. But some residents are concerned the history of the area could get lost in the process.

Local control advocates said the Florida legislature has taken preempting home rule to a new level this session. The legislature wants to extend property tax breaks, regulate vacation rentals and community redevelopment agencies.

Legislation changing local control of Community Redevelopment Agencies is heading to the Florida Senate from the House. But it’s unlikely the Senate will take up the House bill. A similar bill in the Senate died in committee.

Florida lawmakers want to phase out community redevelopment agencies that combat blight and slums. Complaints of misuse of funds and corruption are plaguing CRAs. But local governments are fighting to save them.

Florida lawmakers are considering shutting down community redevelopment agencies, citing reports of misuse of public money. Supporters are hoping to strike a compromise, before the Legislature kills CRAs outright.

The City of Tallahassee is beginning to negotiate the sale of the Firestone Building and Bloxham Annex to the North American Properties company. The properties are located at the corner of Gaines and Gadsden Streets, just east of Cascades Park. NAP hopes to replace the abandoned state offices with a mixed-use community, complete with residential housing, and space for retail, dining and entertainment venues.

Tallahassee’s Community Redevelopment Agency is hoping to boost visitors, and it’s putting $85,000 behind its effort.  Officials are hosting a workshop to help non-profits get their hands on some of that cash.
