Holiday Forecast: Shoppers Are In A Buying Mood

Holiday shopping makes up almost half of all retail sales.

Forecasters are predicting lots of shopping in the coming weeks. Florida Retail Federation officials said the state’s shoppers are in a “buying mood,” as evidenced by an early start to the holiday shopping season.

Florida Retail Federation President Rick McAllister says holiday shopping gets started earlier every year, with some big brand stores looking at Christmas in November.

State Officials Honor Businesses Employing People With Disabilities

Seven Florida businesses including many in Central and South Florida, have been recognized for their work in employing people with disabilities. Governor Rick Scott presented the awards as part of Disability Employment Awareness Month. The Governor has made jobs his priority and says everyone who wants to work should be able to do so.

“This was a wonderful event. You think of everybody we know. Everyone wants a job. And it’s nice to recognize these companies that are helping individuals with disabilities get a job, keep a job [and] helping them with their training,” he said.

STEM Jobs On The Rise But Potential Employees Are Scarce

The number of available jobs in science, technology, engineering and math is on the rise in Florida, and state officials say, that’s good news for the economy. The biggest area with “Help Wanted” signs in the window is Hillsborough County where, nurses and web developers are in demand.

New Fla. Tourism Marketing Tag Line To Be Unveiled This Week

This week, Visit Florida is holding its annual tourism industry convention in Orlando. Organizers say, this year’s convention is more upbeat than in years past as the state is seeing an uptick in tourism.

More than 750 people who work in the tourism industry will be in Orlando for the conference, which kicks off on Wednesday. Eileen Forrow, who is the vice president of sales and marketing for Visit Florida, says Florida’s tourism is picking up the pace nicely after a couple of sluggish years.

Department of Financial Services Hosts Workshops For Seniors

Financial and insurance scams targeting seniors are on the rise. To combat the problem, Florida's Department of Financial Services is hosting free financial workshops for seniors throughout the month of August. According to a 2009 report by the Center for Retirement Research, the department says the scams could be especially devastating for the almost 50% of late baby boomers who are already at risk of losing their current standard of living.
