Perspectives: Tallahassee Delegation

Jan 6, 2012

The 2012 Florida Legislation gets underway in less than a week.  We get a preview from members of the Tallahassee area delegation: State Senator Bill Montford; and State Representatives Michele Rehwinke-Vasilinda and Alan Williams.

No matter what you may celebrate over the holidays, it wouldn’t be a party without lots of wonderful things to eat. We explore a variety of tasty treats and how to prepare them with Keiser University Executive Chef Travis Howard and the school’s Pastry Chef Angela Wilson.

Florida A&M University’s latest trouble with hazing has again put the issue in the spotlight. We get insights into the behavioral and legal ramifications from Tallahassee Memorial Psychologist Dr. Larry Kubiak, Second Judicial Circuit Assistant State Attorney Jack Campbell and Florida State University Associate Dean Adam Goldstein.

For more than five years, the Village Square has been hosting speakers and forums on a wide range of hot topics, always in a reasoned, civil context. Village Square Executive Director Liz Joyner and Board Co-Chairs, Leon County Commissioner Bryan Desloge and Tallahassee City Commissioner Gil Ziffer talk it over…politely.

A tidal wave of unwanted animals faces the Capital Region’s animal welfare organizations. Meanwhile, there are few volunteers and even less money to stem the tide. We talk it over with Jeanine Reynolds with the Gadsden County Humane Society, CHAT of Wakulla County’s Joan Hendrix and Perri Dale from the Tallahassee/Leon County Animal Service Center.

Former Leon County Commissioner Bob Rackleff has been something of a world traveler since leaving the office he held for a dozen years. He recently returned from several months in Uganda. There he worked with an organization that’s helping that nation’s people build a more effective and equitable society.

Veterans Day is a week off and we get a jump on the observance with special guest Mike Prendergast, executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs.

October is "Disability Awareness Month". In Florida, one of the strongest advocates for those with disabilities is JR Harding. He talks about the catastrophic accidents that made him quadriplegic and how that hasn’t stopped him from living life to the fullest.
