Weekend Event Aims To Promote Wellness In Tallahassee's South City

The city of Tallahassee is launching a new effort in support of community wellness. A free  event  to be held in the South City area this weekend will bring that message home.

The Creating Awareness of Resources and Educational Services, or CARES, Event is aimed at improving life in South City. Local agencies and nonprofits will be distributing information on a number of issues.  City spokeswoman and event planner Heather Teter says the event is all about letting the community know the city of Tallahassee cares.

“We have agencies who focus on health and fitness, parenting and family assistance, job training and financial help," Teter says. "The goal is to connect South City residents with these agencies, and that way they can get all this information to improve their family and build a stronger community.”

But the event isn’t exclusively informative - it also has its share of festivities. Live entertainment, prize giveaways, and food will all be provided. And there will be a kids' area.

“My advice for a family coming to this event is just to have fun - to be receptive of the information, to be engaging, to ask questions of some of these local agencies, and just see how they can take advantage of their services or products,” Teter says.

Plans are underway for future events in the same area. CARES runs this Saturday, June 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Greater Love Church of God in Christ, 524 E. Orange Ave.
