Voter registration closes for presidential primary

Last night Florida election officials closed the book on voter registration for the January 31st Presidential Primary. James Call reports Tuesday was the deadline for citizens to sign up to participate in the election.

There are nine candidates on the Republican Presidential primary ballot. The Democrats already have a nominee in President Barack Obama. Leon County Elections Supervisor Ion Sancho says when one of the two major parties does not have a primary contest, voter turnout is not high; although some voters will switch their party registration to vote in a presidential primary.

"And we're seeing that. We're seeing levels of interest in requesting party changes but we won't know the impact until we total up all the activities at the end of the week."

At the end of November there were 11.2 million people registered to vote in Florida. 4.5 million Democrats, four million Republicans and 2.6 million people registered with another political party.
