In anticipation of stormy weather and an influx of calls, officials say they’re keeping the city of Tallahassee’s call center open through the night.
Heather Kidd won’t be doing the overnight shift, she’s just working an hour extra on this day, and so far she’s fielded a few calls, but nothing urgent.
"Actually, it’s quite calm, you know, the calm before the storm as they always say," Kidd said.
Kidd says she’s been answering questions ranging from how to prevent frozen pipes to what to do if the power goes out. And Tallahassee Utility spokesman James Barnes says even with just a light smattering of snow and ice predicted, officials aren’t taking any chances.
“ Clearly ice on power lines, ice on trees – those beautiful canopy roads those branches can get a little heavy and then break. But all of our crews are on standby. We have necessary resources here to support any inclement weather we may be seeing,” Barnes said.
Barnes recommends citizens stay safe during the unusually cold weather by taking precautions such as leaving a faucet dripping to protect against freezing pipes.
