UPDATE: Aug. 28, 2014, 1 p.m.:

Andrew Gillum will be Tallahassee's next mayor.  According to Leon County elections officials, qualified write-in candidate Evin Matthews dropped out of the race Wednesday afternoon.  Gillum is now Tallahassee mayor-elect and will not appear on the ballot in November.

City Commissioner Andrew Gillum is one step closer in his bid to be Tallahassee’s next mayor.  Tallahassee’s mayoral primary has been called, and Gillum has won.

As primary election returns rolled in, Gillum gave a rousing speech to supporters at his election party.  Gillum says the city has the raw materials necessary to be great.

“This being the smartest community in the state of Florida?  More degrees per capita than any other city in this state?  One out of two people with at least a Bachelor’s degree?  We have no reason not to be excellent and innovative.  No reason whatsoever,” Gillum says.

But Gillum’s race is not quite over yet.  A write-in candidate named Evin Matthews has qualified for the race, too, and he’ll face Gillum in the general election.
