UF Fraternity suspended amidst hazing scandal

The University of Florida is suspending the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity after a hazing incident that took place Saturday.  University President Bernie Machen sent an email to the student body, calling on all students to reject hazing. University spokeswoman Janine Sikes says they took swift and immediate action.

“The fraternity was placed on interim suspension immediately last Saturday and since then the national chapter has also ordered the chapter to disband.”

Sikes says details regarding the case will be disclosed when a police report is complete. She says what’s being described as a “serious physical hazing incident” was reported immediately.

“An individual came forward to the University Police Department on Saturday and that investigation is ongoing.”

Officials have suspended the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity after learning about the hazing incident involving fraternity members. It is still unclear whether the incident happened on campus.
