A nationwide event aimed at promoting crime and drug prevention awareness will have a much bigger presence in the Tallahassee community this year. The Tallahassee Police Department is partnering with Target to host its version of “National Night Out” Tuesday at Cascades Park.
Every year since the early mid-1980s, “National Night Out” is celebrated on the first Tuesday in August. It was started by the National Association of Town Watch. In the past, TPD Community Relations Supervisor Sgt. Artemus Shepherd says they commemorated the day by assisting locals with own events.
“This year, we decided we’ll just do something a little bigger, invite everyone from the city and Leon County to come out and get information on what they can do to help deter crime,” said Shepherd.
Shepherd says at this year’s event, they’ll have information on the Neighborhood Watch Program, TPD’s crime prevention programs, and share home and business security tips and services.
“We have a residential security survey, and that’s where crime prevention practitioners will go out to the home. It’s a free service,” he added. “And, they will give the homeowner some suggestions on what they can do to make their home a little safer, and actually deter burglaries from occurring.”
Tuesday’s event will take place at Cascades Park from 6 to 9 p.m.
