Tallahassee Remembers Those Who Gave Their All

Tom Flanigan

Tallahassee observed Memorial Day with solemn ceremonies on Monday, May 25.  One service was hosted by Post 13 American Legion.

Speakers at the veterans section of the Oakland Cemetery included Post past commanders, like Charlie Lecroix.

“We have another opportunity to say thank you to the men and women who have paid the ultimate price,” he told the crowd of more than 100 people. “We have 168 graves right here.”

Speaker Val Farley was also a previous post commander.

“He had buddies on one side and buddies on the other who didn’t come back,” he said, recalling a story of heroism and sacrifice from World War II.  “And he wasn’t really sure why he didn’t.  And that was love.”

And even though there had been talk future Memorial Day services might take place at Tallahassee's new National Cemetery, present Post Commander John Folsom said that's by no means certain.

“As much as we may want to do it,” he said after the ceremony.  “There may be some logistics that lead us back here.”

What is certain, Florida's Capital City will continue to remember those who died in service to the nation.
