The Tallahassee City Commission approved a plan Wednesday to expand downtown district boundaries. Some hope to see economic growth as a result.
In a meeting Wednesday commissioners approved without discussion a call for Tallahassee’s downtown district boundaries to be redefined. The current boundaries were formed in 1971 when the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority, or TDIA, was created to reverse an exodus of businesses and residents.
Director of the TDIA Jay Revell says the new plan is an opportunity to bring more attention to what downtown Tallahassee has to offer.
“We definitely see the downtown area as being something for everyone, and we want to market that in such a way that everyone in these different demographics knows what’s going on,” Revell says.
The new boundaries will include Cascades Park and parts of Gaines Street. But businesses there won’t have to pay additional taxes. An ordinance to expand the boundaries will be presented at a Commission meeting Oct. 8, and a public hearing is scheduled to be held on Oct. 22.
