A Silver Anniversary Celebration for Leon County's Main Library

Tom Flanigan

Hundreds of people showed up on Saturday to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Main Leon County Library building in downtown Tallahassee.

During the event, Chainsaw artist John Birch was hard at work outside the library. He's turning what's left of a great live oak tree into a sculpture showing historic happenings. Meanwhile, local musicians like the duo "Hot Tamale" played inside. There was nostalgia for some grownups, such as Leon County Commissioner John Dailey.

“I can remember I was a senior in high school when we cut the ribbon on this library,” he said, recalling the 1991 grand opening of the structure. “And it’s fun now watching my boys grow up and going to the library as well.”

Dailey's son Tommy was eager to talk about his new favorite library book.

“The one I’m reading right now is ‘Lego Chima’”, he said proudly holding up the volume for inspection.

Saturday was also the kickoff for the library's spring offering of fruit and vegetable seeds to patrons.
