Saint George Island Fire Still Smoldering

freshfromflorida.com

A fire is still smoldering at Saint George Island. It’s a result of burning debris blown into some saw grass. The fire started by a landowner burning debris in his backyard grew from the wind. Florida Forest Service Franklin County Forest Area Supervisor Joey Taranto says the only preventative measure is for homeowners to proceed with caution when burning debris and other materials.

“In Florida, this time of year, with the winds and the lower humidity, you just have to be very careful and very cautious if you’re going to do any kind of yard debris burning," Taranto said. "My suggestion was just to be very cautious. Stay with it, have a garden hose or a water hose with you, and a rake and a shovel and be right there with it.”

The homeowner who caused the fire did not meet the requirements for burning debris on his or her property, and was given a notice of violation. Taranto estimates the fire is around 68 and a half acres, and it will take a while before it’s is completely put out. No homes were damaged.
