Over the weekend local officials collected more than 250 pounds of unwanted medication. They’ll dispose of it by incineration. The collection drive is part of an effort to keep medications from reaching the state’s water bodies.
Medicines flushed down the toilet or washed down the sink can have an impact on the fish and frogs living in the state’s water bodies. That’s according to Department of Environmental Protection Environmental Specialist, Lauri Tenace.
“We especially would like people not to flush things like antibiotics and endocrine disrupting drugs like birth control,” Tenace says.
The DEP is planning another drive coming up in April. In the meantime, Tenace says residents can contact their local law enforcement agencies to ask if they have medicine collection and disposal programs.
