Progress, Duke Merger Shouldn't Have Big Impact on Floridians

Progress Energy, the second largest utility in Florida is merging with North Carolina based Duke Energy to make the nation’s largest electric utility. But Progress Energy Florida spokeswoman Suzanne Grant said the change shouldn’t be too noticeable to Floridians.

“Progress Energy the parent company has merged with Duke Energy, and that is our new parent company, but our utility name here in Florida will remain Progress Energy Florida for the near term. So customers will continue to see Progress Energy trucks in their neighborhood when there’s a power outage. They’ll call our customer service representatives that they have in the past. Their bills will remain the same," Grant said.

Grant said the company will continue moving forward with plans for a nuclear plant in Levy County. A decision about whether to restore Progress’s offline Crystal River nuclear plant is expected by the end of the year.
