Tallahassee, FL – A well-known Florida Republican activist and environmental lawyer has died, due to complications from diabetes. As Sascha Cordner reports, Thom Rumberger is remembered best for his many successes, especially his role as an Everglades restoration advocate.

Everglades Trust President Mary Barley says she remembers Rumberger as one of a kind with his willingness to restore Florida's River of Grass, commonly known as the Everglades. During a speech he gave in August, U-S Senator Bill Nelson said Rumberger dedicated much of his personal and professional life to its protection:

"His brilliant, incisive mind, his creativity, and his fearlessness combined to make Thom one of Florida's most influential Everglades leaders."

The U.S. Senate, at the request of Democratic Senator Bill Nelson and Republican Senator Marco Rubio, also recognized Rumberger for all of his accomplishments. These included his work as a Marine Corps Veteran, his contributions to redistricting, and public service work. Rumberger is survived by his wife Debbie, seven children, and grandchildren. He was 79.
