Making Retirement For Police Dogs Less Ruff

They take bullets for their partners, work overtime for no pay and don’t get benefits. But as Jim Ash reports, that would change under a proposal by a House Democrat to set up a retirement plan for police dogs.

Senator Joseph Abruzzo of Wellington wants to set up a program for private contractors to care for K-9 officers after they hang up their badges. Abruzzo won the approval of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Criminal and Civil Justice in short order.

“Thank you Mister Chairman. This will create the Care for Law Enforcement Dog program which will create a stable source of funding for handlers and adopters of law enforcement dogs. That is the bill, Mister Chairman.”

Taxpayers would be on the hook for 300 thousand dollars a year. Caregivers would get up to Fifteen hundred dollars for veterinary expenses.
