Life Has Been A Trial For Former Leon County Judge

Saying she’s struggling financially, former Leon County Judge Judith Hawkins is asking the Florida Supreme Court to reinstate her law license.

Hawkins was forced from the bench two years ago after being found guilty of using her office to promote a private ministry. Her law license was suspended last October.

Hawkins says she’s a widow facing foreclosure -- and she’s eager to get back to work .

“I’m prayerful and hopeful that the Florida Bar and the referee will recommend that I be readmitted to the Florida Bar and that the Florida Supreme Court will affirm that recommendation.”

In a five-page petition she filed on her own behalf, Hawkins says she’s unemployed and relies mostly on a 6 thousand dollar a month retirement check.

In the petition, she says she regrets the conduct that led to her removal from office. She says she’s been volunteering at a local hospital and caring for a cancer-stricken niece.  She says life lately has been a challenge.

“That’s an understatement. But I have to admit that through it all, I have found, as Jobe said in the Bible, that God is everything that he said he said that he is, that is has been a journey.”

Hawkins says she doesn’t know how long it will take for the court to decide.
