Leon County School officials are taking another look at high school start times.

According to the CDC, insufficient sleep could lead to drug and alcohol use, and poor academic performance. Some Leon County parents say later start times would mean healthier, more productive students. And School Board Chair Dee Dee Rasmussen agrees with them.

“That’s one of my priorities is to continue to try to push the district to re-evaluate the transportation system. I want our students to be able to learn at a time that is consistent with their adolescent development and their brain capacity,” she said.

Currently, Leon County high schools start at 7:30 am. Elementary, middle and high schools share the same buses. Pushing start times back could mean shifting pick up schedules for all students.
