A new facility that contains all of Leon County's elections functions was officially opened on Thursday, Sept. 21. It's been named in honor of the county's immediate past supervisor of elections.
Leon County Commission Chair John Dailey addressed former Elections Supervisor Ion Sancho directly during the dedication ceremonies.
"Your vision for this joint center and moving everything to this consolidated center took many years, a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and here we are today."
But it wasn't the building that Sancho said he was most proud during his own remarks. Instead, he cited the county's election system that uses paper ballots as a confirming mechanism on how voters voted.
"Every jurisdiction in the country should be required to validate those election data so that every citizen knows when they cast a vote, it's counted as they intended," he insisted.
Sancho, who drew national attention and admiration for his crusade for fair and accurate elections, was Leon County's elections supervisor for 28 years.
