Governor Rick Scott is grumbling about his priority issues which are missing from the budget proposed by lawmakers so far.
For one, Scott hasn’t gotten the across-the-board teacher raises he wanted. The legislature is going for a merit-based pay system instead. The Governor says he plans on going through the budget with a fine-toothed comb. The target: member projects.
“I want to make sure we spend the money well. So I’ll expect like I have in the past two years, lawmakers to come to me and explain their rationale for this is. I’m responsible for all 19.2 million Floridians and I want to make sure we get a return on their investment,” Scott told reporters Thursday.
The state has a budget surplus this year and projects benefiting individual districts or entities have proliferated. Meanwhile Scott and the legislature remain at odds over issues like campaign finance reform. Lawmakers sent him a bill raising campaign contribution limits, and Scott already threatening to veto it.
