Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum has only been running for governor for about a week, but he’s already facing a controversy about his use of a political email system. Now Gillum says he will comply with an investigation.

In a statement from a spokesman, Gillum says the state attorney is obligated to follow up on complaints, and that he’s going to cooperate with an investigation into his use of a political email system.

"The state attorney has a duty to follow up on the complaints his office receives. While I am certain there are no grounds for further action, I will fully comply with the Sheriff's Office. I have apologized for the human error and reimbursed the city for the expense of the software. I look forward to bringing this inquiry to a speedy conclusion."

The response comes after Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil said his department will investigate a complaint that alleges Gillum’s purchase of a political software program violates a Florida law that bars the use of public dollars for political purposes. Gillum says he has reimbursed the city for the purchase of the software and claims it was due to human error.

The issue was first raised in the local blog, Tallahassee Reports.
