The Miami Republican is filing a bill that would make texting behind the wheel a primary offense for drivers younger than 18. He says he hopes teenagers learn from his mistake.
“It happened to me a couple of years back. I got on my phone, I started texting, I hit the guard rail, going onto the highway. That’s the moment that I said I’m going to stop texting and driving.”
Conservatives have blocked similar moves in the past, arguing it infringes on personal liberty. Democratic Representative Emily Slosberg of Delray Beach is sponsoring the companion measure.
