As it had been 153 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was once more read from the steps of Tallahassee's Knott House on Sunday, May 20.
"I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated states and parts of states are, and henceforward shall be, free," exclaimed Brian Bibeau in his long-standing role as Union Brigadier General Edward McCook.
The Emancipation Day event in the Capital City included other speeches and special music, all part of the community celebration of freedom.
