Florida Socialist Workers Party Files Presidential Paperwork

There’s been a lot of talk about “socialism” during this presidential campaign.  Tom Flanigan reports members of the real Socialist Party were filing papers with Florida’s Division of Elections on Monday, August 27.

Naomi Craine chairs Florida’s Socialist Workers Party.  She’s also her party’s candidate for the U-S Senate.  Republicans have been calling President Barack Obama a “socialist”, so the logical question for Craine was, “is he?”

“Some of his policies are similar to the Social Democrats of Europe  who carry out certain kinds of bourgeois socialist measures.”

But Craine says Obama is by no means a true socialist as her party defines the term.  Also, she thinks both major parties support corporations at the expense of workers.  So she and South Florida Congressional write-in Candidate Anthony Dutrow came to Tallahassee.

“Today we’ve filed with the Division of Elections a list of 29 electors to place the Florida Workers presidential ticket on the ballot in Florida.”

That ticket is James Harris for president with Alyson Kennedy his running mate.  The party has fielded presidential contenders since 1948.
