Florida Economic Development Czar Abruptly Resigns

Dec 4, 2012

Governor Rick Scott will have to find another Jobs Czar for the third time in less than a year, after Hunting Deutsch abruptly resigned his $140,000 job running the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

Deutsch, a former banking executive, drew controversy recently following revelations in the Florida Current that he had collected state unemployment benefits between 2009 and 2011. He was in Europe part of that time.

A Republican Senator this week called on Deutsch to explain how he received the benefits. A spokeswoman for Governor Rick Scott's office says the Governor was not aware of Deutsch having been on the state unemployment dole before he was hired.

Deutsch was hired in June to replace Doug Darling, who resigned in April. Florida's former top workforce executive Cynthia Lorenzo served during the interim.

Part of the function of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is t administer the state's unemployment benefits program.
