Florida Democrats Sue For Registration Extension

The Florida Democratic Party has filed a lawsuit against Gov. Rick Scott and Secretary of State Ken Detzner in an effort to get the state’s voter registration deadline pushed back. The official last day to register is Tuesday, but Florida Democratic Party spokesman Max Steele says he’s hopeful there’s time to address the issue.

“We think there’s time and we think it’s an important thing that the courts need to weigh in on so we can explore every option to ensuring every Floridian who wants to vote in this election has the chance to," Steele says.

Democrats pushed Gov. Scott to extend the state’s registration deadline as hurricane Matthew approached, saying storm preparation and recovery could keep some people from signing up in time. Governors in other states impacted by the storm have extended their deadlines, but Scott has told reporters, Floridians had plenty of time to register.
