Florida Advocate Challenges Trump's Statements On LGBTQ People

In his acceptance speech at the Republican convention, Donald Trump said he’d protect the LGBTQ community. But one Florida advocate is skeptical.

Breaking with the Republican Party, presidential nominee Donald Trump said the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning community needs protection. He spoke of the recent shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, saying he would shield LGBTQ citizens from “hateful foreign ideology”. But Michael Farmer with the advocacy group Equality Florida is more worried about domestic issues.

“What he’s missing is that we’re facing discrimination and violence everyday domestically. And that’s the unfortunate truth, that LGBTQ people face disproportionate amounts of hate crimes right here in our country by citizens,” Farmer said.

Farmer says Trump's words are hollow.

“His party platform and his agenda does nothing to address that. In fact it enshrines every piece of that discrimination that’s taking place. So for anyone to believe that Donald Trump mustered the courage to use the word LBGTQ is an answer to the problems that are community is facing, they’re sorely mistaken,” Farmer said.

The new Republican platform, adopted during the recent convention, calls for the reversal of the Supreme Court’s marriage equality decision.
