First "Connect Tallahassee" Set for Saturday

A day-long event in Tallahassee this Saturday (1/7) bills itself as a showcase for alternative ideas of interacting with the mind, body and spirit.

The lead organizer for the happening, called “Connect Tallahassee”, is Donna Tornillo.

“It’s our first one for ‘Connect Tallahassee’ because the umbrella organization for that, which is a non-profit, is the ‘Enlightened Link’, she said. “I’m president of the Enlightened Link and Deanna is the treasurer.”

“Deanna” is Deanna Mims. She explained the whole idea of the occasion is to give attendees a sample of many different ways of looking at the world and themselves.

“If you’re a free-thinking individual, you experience a lot from a whole buffet in your life and you take what works for you and you discard the other things and you make that choice all day long every day with everybody you talk to. But if you keep talking to the same people who have just your opinion you limit your growth and your opportunities to serve others. This is an opportunity to mix it up and make friends and network and just have your eyes open and take what works for you and leave what doesn’t.”

Mims said there will be a multitude of Ted-Talk-type presentations from speakers espousing various philosophies.

“You won’t just find people that some folks just associate with ‘New Age’ kinds of endeavors,” she said. “This is mainstream and the ways that it’s coming at health care improvements, disease prevention (and) disease treatment.”

Plus, Donna Tornillo added, the presentations will include some innovative ways of approaching everyday interactions.

“How to use improvisation in daily life when we are confronted with things that are thrown at us we don’t have a script,” was one example she gave. “How do we do that and use that to make the most of that situation?”

On top of that, she said there will be 25 local vendors on hand to talk about their products and services. The first-ever “Connect Tallahassee” happens this Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Tallahassee’s Four Points by Sheraton Hotel.
