Figg Engineering Lands Major Bridge Project

Texas Department of Transporation

One of the world's largest bridge projects has a Tallahassee connection.  The locally-headquartered Figg Engineering firm will design the new Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge.

Company CEO Linda Figg said this the project is a major get for the  company.

“We were selected recently for a very big bridge in Texas,” she said.  “It’s in Corpus Christi and it will be the biggest cable stay bridge in America.  Between the towers that hold the bridge up through the stays it will be 5 and a half football fields long and will be the biggest one in America, so we’re very excited about that.”

Figg Engineering rose to international prominence back in the early 1980s with the revolutionary design for the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.  That replaced the span that was partly destroyed in a ship collision.  Since then, the company's portfolio has included the Bunker Hill Bridge in Boston, North Carolina's Blue Ridge Parkway Viaduct, the I-35 Bridge in Minneapolis/St. Paul and many more.  The Corpus Cristi Harbor Bridge will have a main span almost half-again as long as the Sunshine Skyway.  And Figg says the project budget is impressively large as well.

“Around $850 million and it will take a number of years to build.  It’s a design build, so we’ll be designing it and then a construction team is building it as we design, so it’s very exciting!”

Exciting and yet another major feather in the cap of a Tallahassee company that is literally world famous.
