Experts: Watch For Danergous Toys

Child safety experts are warning parents that before they start hiding Christmas gifts, they better make sure there’s no hidden dangers.

A recent study by the Public Interest Research Group, “Trouble in Toyland,” warns about some common hazards.

Powerful magnets can pinch internal organs when they attract each other inside a small child, according to the report. It also mentions the dangers of noisy toys that can damage hearing, toys with small parts that present a choking hazard, and metal toys coated with chromium, a toxic substance.

A recent study by the Center for Injury Research and Policy warns that 3.3 million children nationwide were treated in emergency rooms for toy-related injuries between 1990 and 2011, the latest year statistics were available.

The study that in 2011 alone, toy injuries sent a child to the emergency room every three minutes. Half of those were children younger than five.
