Commission Discussion Scheduled For All Saints Lot

City of Tallahassee

The Tallahassee City Commission is set to take up a discussion Tuesday about an empty lot near the corner of Gaines Street and Railroad Avenue. The proposed use for the space is surrounded by growing controversy.

Right now the space behind Gaines Street Pies and Grasslands Brewing Company is primarily used as a parking lot. All Saints District activists say at times as many as 300 cars park there, providing space so people can visit the district’s businesses and festivals. The city is selling that land, and the developer appears poised put a hotel there, a move activists worry could hurt local businesses and negatively impact the community’s character. City officials argue they have taken those factors into account and point to hundreds of parking spaces within a quarter mile of the area. Right now the lot is zoned as a retail space. Tuesday commissioners will take up a proposal to modify the redevelopment plan to zone the space for a hotel instead.
