Commission Announces 'Year Of The Girl'

Kate Payne

The Tallahassee/Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls is calling 2016 the “Year of the Girl”.

This year the advisory group will focus on the experiences of young women, from birth to early adulthood. Commissioners have plans to launch a social media campaign celebrating local girls. Visiting speaker Marcella Torres of Ladies Learning to Lead encouraged the group to go back to basics.

“You think about what it is to you to just have a bad hair day, but think if you don’t have the basic necessities. It can really make you angry, it can really make you upset and you wouldn’t be able to function as you would. It’ll keep you from going to school, it’ll keep you from attending what you would normally attend. Which sets girls back,” she said.

Commissioners talked about issues around health disparities, professional development and sexual assault. The group will continue to shape its goals for girls, as well as plans for community outreach and education.
