Charity sponsors back-to-school shopping for kids in need

Tallahassee, FL – The Junior League of Tallahassee treated 122 school kids to a free shopping spree Sunday evening. Tom Flanigan reports it was the biggest such event since the league began it several years ago.

The Junior League's Project Co-Chair was Annalisa Warner.

"Oh, gosh! You know to be honest with you, it's my favorite event to attend and I know I hear from other people that it's their favorite event. I think if you asked all of us somewhere deep down we'll admit it's all of our favorite event."

It happened at the Kohl's Department Store on Appalachee Parkway where Troy Rickets is the store manager.

"We go out into our local communities and if associates volunteer their time - five associates volunteer three hours of their time for a non-profit organization that benefits children - then Kohl's will recognize that effort with a grant for $500."

With a total of ten volunteer employees, that meant an extra thousand dollars. Polka Dot Express and Office Depot helped, too. The kids got their pick of clothing and shoes and were provided with backpacks full of school supplies. There were also free eye exams, vitamins, dental care items and parent information from Healthy Kids, Florida Kidcare and Whole Child Leon.
