Capital Report: 08-15-2014

The Florida Department of Health is sticking with a plan to award marijuana licenses to growers through a lottery system. Lynn Hatter reports the department issued its final draft for the proposed rule this week as critics maintain the lottery is unfair.

Back during the 2014 session, the legislative leadership tried and failed to change the state’s municipal pension systems.  This was of particular concern to police and firefighter unions.  Now, there’s a coalition made up of mainly business-backed groups that wants lawmakers to revisit that campaign during the 2015 session.  However, Sascha Cordner reports not everyone is rooting for the coalition to succeed.

As part of his reelection campaign, Florida Governor Rick Scott is touting a new plan he says will help save the state’s environment. But Regan McCarthy reports reactions to the proposal have been mixed. While some environmentalists are seething over Scott’s statements, at least one man is praying for him.
