Capital Report: 07-24-2015

In about two weeks state lawmakers will gather in Tallahassee to redraw Florida’s congressional borders.  And as Nick Evans reports, the scope of those changes is turning races across the state into a game of musical chairs.

Florida was once among the top U.S. locations for movies, trailing only California and New York. But since the funding for a state incentive program has dried up, it’s been difficult to attract film projects. Now, after failing to get funding for the program last legislative session, Regan McCarthy reports the film industry is ready for action on “Florida Film Incentives” take two.

In tiny Quitman Georgia, an hour or so north of the Florida border, a former special forces soldier and rodeo circuit rider is bucking the recovery establishment. As Jim Ash reports, Mike Randall is using “equine therapy” to help combat veterans overcome traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress.

Young people from all over Florida recently came to the state capital for the Able Trust Youth Leadership Forum.  Although each of these young people has their own unique challenges, Tom Flanigan reports they have no intention of letting these disabilities get in the way of their futures.

Finally on Capital Report, It’s been over a year since HB 851 was signed into law, letting undocumented students pay in-state tuition at Florida public universities. Rebekah Entralgo follows up with two undocumented brothers, one a student, the other an activist, on how it’s working and what’s expected in the future.
