Capital Report: 06-08-2012

A battle is heating up over Florida voters, but it isn’t political candidates who are fighting. Voter registration groups claimed victory in court as a judge struck down parts of the state’s election law last week. And this week, the state stands defiant against a federal order to stop purging non-citizen voters. As Jessica Palombo reports, these fights over voting rights have pitted Florida Governor Rick Scott against the federal government and against all 67 of the state’s supervisors of Elections.

While some of the state’s elections supervisors are concerned about possibly removing eligible voters from the voter lists Jill Roberts from member station WQCS in Fort Pierce reports that being told at the polls you aren’t eligible to vote doesn’t mean you can’t cast your ballot…

Florida A & M University President James Ammons is under increased pressure to resign and that pressure went up another notch this week. On Thursday, FAMU’s Board of Trustees issued a vote of no-confidence in the embattled president. Lynn Hatter reports the move is the latest stemming from the hazing death of FAMU Drum major Robert Champion. 

Twenty-five North and Central Florida lawmakers have sent a letter to the President of Citizen’s Property Insurance backing the company’s plan to increase rates for new policy holders above a 10-percent cap imposed by the legislature. But Regan McCarthy reports a number of South Florida lawmakers say they’ve got legislation ready to file that would block that move if Citizens bumps rates in their area. 

Faced with budget gaps in each of the past five years, the State of Florida has been looking to save money. Tom Flanigan reports a special task force charged with finding those savings wrapped up its work in Tallahassee this week….
