Capital Report: 04-25-2013

Criminals sentenced to die in Florida could wait less time until their executions under a bill the House [Legislature] passed today [on Thursday]. Jessica Palombo reports, the capital punishment speed-up passed after a debate filled with scripture and emotional pleas.

Medicaid is a federal, state and local program that provides low-income people with insurance. Last year, the state and counties sparred over disputed Medicaid bills. The state backed down and settled for far less than it felt was owed. Now, as Lynn Hatter reports, the Florida legislature is revamping the way the county share of Medicaid is calculated. But critics say the new formula will lead some counties to pay more, and others to pay less.

The Florida Senate has passed a measure to reform state-backed Citizens’s  Property Insurance. Regan McCarthy reports the bill’s author says the plan isn’t perfect, but is a good first step .

There’s a Florida resident who’s been held captive in Iran for more than six years. And, as Sascha Cordner reports, the Florida Legislature is trying to get the attention of those in Washington D-C to do something about it.

Governor Rick Scott held another ceremonial bill signing today.  This particular measure would ban Florida’s law enforcement agencies from using remote controlled flying drones, except under very specific circumstances.  Valerie Edwards was at the Capitol today as the governor put his approving signature on the legislation.
