Capital Report: 04-21-2015

Florida may not have a budget in place before the start of the next fiscal year—something that has not occurred in more than two decades. Furthermore, at least one major hospital in the state says it’s running out of money and can soon close, if lawmakers can’t come to an agreement on healthcare funding.

A gaming reform bill is moving one space forward in the House. Regan McCarthy reports the measure, which once included plans for two destination resort casinos, is now largely focused on reducing greyhound racing.

A controversial abortion bill that now includes a new exemption is now heading to the Senate Floor, after passing its last committee hearing Monday. As Sascha Cordner reports, it’s also teed up for a vote on the House floor, despite continued opposition.

That proposal mandating an abortion waiting period was taking center stage Tuesday on the House floor.  But Nick Evans reports lawmakers discussed a handful of other measures that could affect health administration in the state.

The state association of elections supervisors and House and Senate leaders are eager to bring Florida into the 21st Century with online voter registration.  But as Jim Ash reports, the Legislature’s attempt to deliver online registration is meeting stiff opposition from Governor Rick Scott’s administration.

Medications can be difficult to fill and maintain, depending on what you take. For some meds, you need a specially licensed doctor to write you a prescription every time you need a refill. But, as Matthew Seeger reports, a pair of and senate bills may are working towards a shared goal- to give nurse practitioners the ability to prescribe a wider range of medications.
