Capital Report: 01-25-2012

As Florida’s economy continues to rebound from the recession, most of the new jobs being created are in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math, often called “STEM”.  Much of the workforce to fill those positions is trained in community colleges.  President Barack Obama highlighted the need for STEM-based workforce training in his State of the Union address, and as Lynn Hatter reports, his education secretary talked about it during a trip to Florida’s capital city on Wednesday.

An idea to rescind a proposed constitutional amendment on this November’s ballot appears to face an uphill climb in the Florida Legislature. James Call reports, a Senate committee Wednesday discussed a proposal to pull back an amendment that limit property tax increases to 5 percent.

The debate on how to reduce personal injury protection insurance fraud was raging again in the Florida Legislature today (Wednesday).  Tom Flanigan reports those supporting the House’s solution held a noon pep rally in the Capitol Rotunda.  Meanwhile, consumer advocates are favoring the Senate’s less sweeping approach to the problem….

Some lawmakers are raising concerns about the Florida Department of Corrections closing 11 facilities. As Sascha Cordner reports, they wonder if the department is taking into account the impact of shutting down prisons in small communities.
