Campus Carry Coming Back To Florida Legislature

Rep. Scott Plakon (R-Longwood)

For the third year running Florida’s lawmakers will consider whether concealed weapons should be allowed on college campuses.

Longwood Republican Rep. Scott Plakon has filed a measure removing prohibitions against carrying concealed firearms on college campuses.  Last session, he came out as a vocal supporter of the move after his daughter’s school went into lock down over reports of an active shooter.  In 2015 and 2016, identical legislation died in the Senate Judiciary committee, but that panel has a new chair: Sarasota Republican Greg Steube.  Before jumping to the senate, Steube was in the House, and he sponsored campus carry both times it failed.

Nick Evans came to Tallahassee to pursue a masters in communications at Florida State University. He graduated in 2014, but not before picking up an internship at WFSU. While he worked on his degree Nick moved from intern, to part-timer, to full-time reporter. Before moving to Tallahassee, Nick lived in and around the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years. He listens to far too many podcasts and is a die-hard 49ers football fan. When Nick’s not at work he likes to cook, play music and read.
