Leaders of the state university system say they’re confident a battle between Florida A&M University’s president and her board chairman will soon be put to rest.
FAMU President Elmira Mangum and FAMU Board Chairman Rufus Montgomery have been at-odds for months. The clashes are related to Mangum’s travel spending, hiring decisions, but mostly a controversial move to transfer financial control of the FAMU-Florida State College of Engineering, to FSU. Board of Governors Member Matthew Carter says the state university system governing board isn't interested in "micromanaging" the school.
“But by the same token when there’s a problem, we deal with the problem. I think fundamentally FAMU and every other institution….needs to focus on those performance metrics. Because that’s what they’re graded on, that controls their funding," he said.
The Board is expecting the university to submit a revised work plan during an upcoming meeting. FAMU’s first proposal was rejected.
