Bill Nye To Campaign in Fla for Obama; Touts STEM Degrees As Reason To Vote

Oct 22, 2012

Bill Nye, widely known for hosting the children’s science TV show “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” will be in Florida for two days.  He’ll be in the swing state on behalf of President Barack Obama, and one of his stops will include a talk about the importance of STEM degrees, which is also one of Governor Rick Scott’s priorities.

Making science fun and easy to understand is something Bill Nye the Science Guy did for years on his TV show.  Now, he says he’s hoping to inspire another generation to focus on their education, especially in fields like, science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM by voting in the election.

“Well, the main thing is we want you to do is vote. And, this election is a clear choice,” said Nye. “If you go one way, you’re going to be doing less. Less science, technology, engineering, and math, and that, in my claim, is in nobody’s best interest.”

And, Nye says that’s why he’s also voting for President Obama over Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

“I’ve given it a lot of thought. And, we have to maintain our technological lead in the United States. We have to continue to support Science! And, I just strongly believe the President’s policies in that regard is so much better. He’s planning to hire 100,000 new teachers,” said Nye.

“And, you can cut it this way and that, but in general, the other side wants to cut the funding for education. It may look like you would balance the budget doing something like that, but in just a few years, you’ll be falling behind. You’ll be worse off!”

Meanwhile, when lining up both Romney’s and Mr. Obama’s education proposals side by side, they look very similar. Nye is expected to talk to students at the Florida Institute of Technology Tuesday at the Gleason Performing Arts Center in Melbourne from 10 a.m. to noon.

Bill Nye will also be in Boca Raton, Florida Monday night for the last presidential debate between Mr. Obama and Romney.
